2007 Great American Barbecue - Sauce, Baste & Rub Contest, Kansas City May 27-28, 2007

Congratulations to NCBS board member and Vice President Jim “Trim” Tabb for his barbecue rub Trim Tabb’s Pig Powder winning the grand prize of the Great American Barbecue Sauce, Baste & Rub Contest.

Winning sauce and rub contests is nothing new for Trim Tabb’s Pig Powder as it has won more than 15 awards since 1995 and this year, again received the distinction it achieved in 2000 when it was recognized as the Best Rub on the Planet at the American Royal Barbecue Invitational out of a field of over 100 entries. Jim’s daughter Lee Ann Whippen uses his Pig Powder in her restaurant and catering business—Wood Chicks BBQ.

The Great American Barbecue Sauce, Baste & Rub Contest is part of a bigger contest—The Great American Barbecue that took place May 27-28, 2007 which is set to become KCBS’s premier bbq cook-off. Over two hundred teams competed in a variety of categories. Number one in the invitational cook-off was Twin Oak Smokin Crew, followed by Munchin Hogs @ The Hilto in second place, Habitual Smokers in third place, Mokan Meatheads in fourth place and Pellet Envy in fifth place.

To participate in the invitational cook-off, one must win a competition put on by a sanctioning body that holds a minimum of three competitions a year and win a competition with 50 or more cookers, all in one year.

There is also an open competition that any cooker can enter. Grillas BBQ Team took first place in the open competition, Habitual Smokers second place and Brew ‘N’ Bar-B-Que took third.
